Sustainability in Fashion: Just a Hype?
Lydia Brearley, Sustainability Consultant – UK /Sweden
Lydia worked for over 20 years in the fashion industry- working for C&A Europe (which is how I know Hanim and Tanya), Debenhams, George @ Asda (Walmart) , and for the last 8 years – British lifestyle retailer Joules. At Joules she worked her way up to Head of Buying and Design, and during her time there she also had the opportunity to work and live in Shanghai for a couple of years.
In this interview Hanim Jain discussed with Lydia on current sustainability issues in the Fashion & Textiles Industry.
Lydia gives her view on “How will retail and shopping change in the future”:
Fast Fashion will decline
Circular economy is the future
Resale / Secondhand will the the biggest growth area in retail
Rental platforms – driven by Gen Z who value experience over ownership
Innovation – Products which are ‘made to be remade’ (examples of Adidas FutureLoop and H&M Loop)
Repair & Upcycling opportunities (The Restory, and the boom in sneaker cleaner!)
